Steve J. Speckhart, age 91, a lifelong resident of Lorain, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at New Life Hospice after a long illness. He was born on September 2, 1919 in Lorain, Ohio to the late John and Theresa (nee Galler) Speckhart.
Steve enlisted in the United Sates Army on March 20, 1942 in Fort Benjamin, Indiana. He served his country in World War II as a Sergeant with the 82nd. Airborne Division and was honorably discharged on January 7, 1946.
Mr. Speckhart retired from National Tube in 1976 after 30 years of service as a Foreman. After his retirement he began working in the maintenance department at Lorain Community Hospital where he was employed until 1986.
He was a member of Nativity BVM Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 118 and the Senior Fellowship Club and volunteered with the Black River Fire Department.
Steve enjoyed golf, bowling, gardening and stained glass.
Mr. Speckhart is survived by his wife of 69 years, Josephine Speckhart (nee Gambis); son, Steve P. (Marie) Speckhart, of Casa Grande, Arizona; daughters, Sandra Vaughn, of Lorain, Janet (Mark) Diso, of Vermilion, Sally (Ed) Cornwell, of Amherst; grandchildren, William, Jonathan, Louie, Stacey, Valerie and Michael; great-grandchildren, Katherine, Caroline, Jacob, Lilianna, Cortney, Justin, Alexis and Sierra; brother, John (Virginia) Speckhart of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Theresa (nee Speckhart) Farkas, of Lorain; brothers,Charles Speckhart, of Lorain, Ed Speckhart, of Tennessee and Robert Speckhart , of Elyria.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity BVM Catholic Church, 418 W. 15th. Street, Lorain. Rev. Fr. Robert Glepko, pastor, will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Amherst Military Honor Guard.
The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his name to the New Life Hospice, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035 or Nativity BVM Catholic Church.
